Winter backpacking can be a great time and as long as you know how to handle the weather and pack appropriately, it can be a truly invigorating experience. Not only that, but there will be a lot less traffic on the trail and you can truly have these beautiful settings to yourself.

Something that you will obviously want to do is to stay warm. Your clothing is a great place to start, but it may not be in the way that you think. While most people will run to the parka and the heavy sweatshirts, this is actually something that you will want to avoid unless you are backpacking in severe weather conditions. For normal trails, you will want to wear lighter layers that can be peeled off as the day goes on and then put back on as the sun goes down.

Since you are going to be on the move, your body will naturally heat up throughout the day. Believe it or not, you are not going to get as cold as you think. By wearing breathable clothing that is insulated, you can have thinner layers that will be much more effective. Some of the clothing may cost a little more, but it is better than lugging all those extra pounds around with you.

Fire is going to be an essential when you are backpacking in the winter. You are going to need to protect your supplies and ensure that they do not get wet and are ready to go when you need them. It has been suggested many times that you use a foodsaver bag and we are recommending it again. Pack each days fire supply and then seal the bag. You should have matches, a candle and some type of fire starter in each bag. Dryer lint or extra candle wicks will work great for this.

Since it is the winter time and fire is so important, you should also pack a few extra sets of supplies. Since they will take up very little space and you will be disposing of some of them every day, taking double what you need is not a bad idea. You never want to get caught on a winter backpacking trip without a source of fire.

Your tent is another critical element that needs to be looked at. Winter is no time to skimp on your tent and sleeping gear so make sure you have things that will keep you warm and hold up to bad weather. The nights may be a little windier than normal and your tent should be a true shelter and you sleeping bag needs to keep you warm.

Last but not least, you need to make sure that you are able to stay dry. Winter is a time that you want to make sure that you have one of everything as a backup in your bag. If you go through a storm or fall into a creek, you will need to shed the wet clothes right away and get dry. If not, you are surely going to get sick.

Backpacking does not have to stop because the winter months have rolled in. Take the time to prepare your pack properly and follow some of these basic tips and you can enjoy this great hobby all year around.

While this was once considered something that the “hippie generation” did, people are quickly realizing that this is a great way to see the country and not really spend a lot of money.

Backpacking is a truly wonderful experience and if you enjoy backpacking where you live, why not take a trip to Europe and keep your costs down by backpacking your way across the country? This enables you to have a great vacation and not have to be concerned with a lot of the details that you normally would on a vacation. No hotel or restaurant reservations, just you and the country and nothing in between.

Europe is a beautiful part of the world, but with the economy being the way it is, traveling to Europe may not be in your budget. Between airfare, hotels and food, it could set you back quite a bit. This is why backpacking your way across Europe is such a great idea. You can keep your costs down and still enjoy everything that Europe has to offer.

The ideal time to travel across Europe by backpacking would be the summertime. The weather will be ideal and the prices for the Hostels that you can stay at will be extremely inexpensive. You will learn to love these little diamonds in the rough as you will be able to get yourself cleaned up and get a great nights rest for a very inexpensive price. If you go at the height of the season, you may have some trouble getting a room though, so you will want to plan your trip more on the extremes to avoid the really popular times.

One of the things that you will definitely want to invent in during your trip across Europe is a railpass. You can be in Paris in the morning and Italy at night if you so desire. If you pay upfront for a multi-city pass, you will be able to pretty much get on and off as you please and will have true freedom to explore your favorite areas of Europe.

Now while you will occasionally be staying in hostels, the bulk of the time you are going to be on the road. That being the case, you need to pack smart. Since you are going to be in a foreign country, you are going to have to make sure that you have your passport with you and keep it safe and dry. In addition, you will need to make sure you have extra clothing, a tent, toiletries, money (and maybe some credit cards) and the other basics.

For the most enjoyable trip to Europe, do some research and plan your whole trip out. Find out where the hostels are and when you will be using them. Figure out where you will be camping out and make sure you are going by a water source so you can replenish and clean up. Now the only thing left to do is hit the trails for an experience that you will never forget.

When you get into backpacking, the first thing that you are going to realize is that there is a huge variety of packs to choose from. While everyone has different tastes, the backpacks are more about functionality than anything else. While you obviously want a pack that you like, you also need to make sure that it is the right type of pack for the trip that you are taking. It is no surprise that many backpacking enthusiasts actually have several different packs in their basement.

Because there are so many suppliers, you are going to find a variety of backpacks at every price point. Whether you surf the web for the best deal or go to a storefront, you will have more than enough options in what you are looking for. If you do shop online for a better deal, you may still want to head to a store that has the same pack to make sure that it fits right and is exactly what you are looking for. This is going to be your lifeline for the duration of the trip, so shop wisely.

You will quickly realize that everything starts with your pack. The size and durability of the pack are going to dictate how many supplies you can take and what kind of load that you will have to pack. For instance, a heavy backpack with few compartments is not going to be ideal for a mountain trip that lasts a week. You go with something like that, you are just asking for trouble.

Now the reason that it is suggested that you actually try on the pack before you buy it is because comfort needs to be one of your major concerns. This pack is going to be on your back for days on end and if it starts to rub you the wrong way or does not sit right, you are going to be in for a miserable trip. Before anything else, make sure the pack fits you comfortably.

For the best results, you would be advised to get some help from an experienced backpacker or an educated sales person. Try to find someone that has been on the trails and knows exactly how to fit you for a pack. The pack should sit perfectly on your back and line up properly with your shoulders and torso. If it doesn’t, just move onto the next pack. This is actually why it is better to do the shopping with someone else. Sometimes you can fall in love with something because of the way it looks and convince yourself that it fits okay. Consider the second person to be your conscience.

Before you set out on your backpacking trip, your pack needs to be perfect. It has to fit properly and be able to handle the load that you are going to have to carry for the next few days. Without the right pack, you are asking to have a miserable time. The problem is that once you start out on your trip, you are stuck with the pack so get it right and take the time to make sure that you get the perfect backpack for both your body and the trip.

Backpacking is a great experience, but if you ask someone that has packed too much stuff, they will tell you that it is one of the worst

things that you can ever do. It is not the trip that was bad, it was their lack of preparation that made the trip a negative experience. The best tip that you will ever get in regards to backpacking is to make sure that your pack is set up appropriately and that you are not carrying unnecessary items with you.

The first thing to consider when you are setting up your back is how long you are going to be going for and what type of trail you are traveling on. There are always basics that you are going to need, such as a flashlight, first aid, etc…, but if you are going on a trail that has prepared cabins, you are obviously going to pack differently that you would if you are forced to camp outdoors each night.

One of the first things that you are going to learn as you get into backpacking is that you need to pack light gear. Saving a few ounces here and a few ounces there can make all the difference. If 16 items are packed that weigh 2 ounces less than an alternative, you have just shaved 2 pounds off your pack. That may not seem like a lot, but when you are hiking 10 miles up hill, you will definitely start to feel it.

A common mistake of first time backpackers is to pack too much clothing. Get it in your head that you are going to be outdoors and you will truly be roughing it. While you will want to change underwear and socks, you can easily wear the rest of your clothing for several days. If you are hiking with water sources close by, you are only going to need two sets of clothing. You will be wearing one set and the other will be in your pack. At the end of the day, you can change and wash them out to dry overnight. That is your wardrobe for the duration of the trip.

In addition to clothing, you will want to make sure that you pack things that have multiple uses. This will decrease your load and allow you to pack much lighter. For example, cord is something that you will want to have. It can serve as a bag tie, clothesline and also be used in emergencies to tie off a splint.

Something else to think about is using candles instead of flashlights or lanterns. They are super lightweight and are a light source that can also be used as a fire starter and when you have to waterproof something, you can melt down the candle and cover the item in wax.

One item that you absolutely want to have is duct tape. On a backpacking trip, this is something that will be used for a variety of reasons. You can use it as a bandage for an injury, it can seal holes in clothing or your sleeping gear and in a true emergency, it can be used as insulation.

Another item that is a must have is some type of plastic matting or sheet. Instead of sitting or lying down on a wet area, the plastic can be put down as another layer. You can turn it into a rain coat if you get hit with an unsuspecting storm and it can also serve as a shelter. This is a perfect example of the type of gear that you need to pack. If it has only one use, try and find something else as a substitute.

If you are looking for something that can literally be a life changing experience. Having the time to pull back and enjoy nature is something that you will never forget. Backpacking is not only a hobby, but can also be a demanding sport as well. However, there is no reason that anyone cannot partake in some of the easier trails and get exercise to work themselves up to some of the more challenging backpacking trips.

When you are leaving on a backpacking trip, one of the first things that you are going to have to do is learn how to pack your bag appropriately. You will learn very quickly that you will only want to pack what you absolutely need. Carrying unnecessary items through rough trails will wear you down quickly and can end up taking some of the enjoyment out of the trip.

If you have never been on a backpacking trip, it is a combination of hiking and camping. You will move during the day and then make camp at night. That being the case, you are not only going to be carrying food supplies, you are also going to have to carry all of your sleeping gear as well. Depending upon the backpacking site that you choose, you could be moving from campsite to campsite, cabin to cabin or you may be totally on your own.

For the trip to be successful, everyone is going to have to work together. It is only natural that some people will be stronger than others. That being the case, you may want them to carry the heavier items, but you can help them out by carrying some of their daily gear or food supplies. This courtesy will go a long way and make the trip much more enjoyable.

Another courtesy that must be extended if you are backpacker is one that is granted to the land you are traveling on. It is common knowledge in this community that you take care of the land that you are traveling on. There are others that went before you that took care of the land so that you could enjoy it and you need to do the same thing to make sure that the people backpacking after you enjoy the same.

Safety should always be a concern when you are backpacking. With that in mind, you need to make sure that one of your members is experienced in first aid and always has an eye out for everyone. This is a pretty heavy burden to carry in that their main job will be to make sure that everyone’s pack is safe and that the route is well planned and safe to travel. Ideally, this will be the person with the most backpacking experience.

There are plenty of reasons to start backpacking, but the one that is the most important to people seems to be to enjoy the great outdoors. There is simply nothing better than getting outside and living off of the land. If your next backpacking trip is going to be your first one, be prepared to fall in love with a new hobby.
